Rylsky: I don't know much about football, but I enjoy watching it.

Do you like and watch football?
Do you have a team that you think will win the World Cup?

Should we try something like what we did for the Stanley Cup?

  • 0

As the World Cup nears, this might be a taste of what we see.

Is Lev Yashin the greatest football goalie of all time?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/resources/idt-sh/yashin

  • 1

Let's say he is a legend at least for my country and for our fans. For sure. Thank you for this reminder.

  • 0

Big Islanders news.

Lamoriello fired Snow and Weight, now can he resign Tavares?

  • 1

Truly great news, but I see low possibility to keep JT 91 in our Team, see how he played last season - looks like his thoughts are in Montreal, Toronto or Chicago. I do believe that he wanted to go.

  • 0

Montreal would desperately love to sign him. They have the money to do so, but I wonder if they have enough good players to surround him with for John to go there.

Toronto is just something for the media to talk about, just like Stamkos; they don't need John, they need defence men.

Chicago has too many players making big bucks, and it would take voodoo for him to go there.

This will be very interesting to see what John decides.

Just before the Finals and before I start to make predictions.

Part of me would like to see Ovi win, part of me would like to see Vegas win.

One thing is certain. Stanley is going to get a ton of flyer miles.

Frank Sinatra said it best when he sang.

Many interesting plots and sub plots going into the finals. The Capitals Tom Wilson has been running around like a mad man. Will he be so reckless with Ryan Reaves ready and more than willing to toss some bombs at Wilson. Gerard Gallant was fired in mid season last year, not notified, and had to wait at the curb for a taxi to pick him up and drive him somewhere. Capitals Trotz might be one of the shortest head coaches in a long time. The Caps have a thing, practice starts with someone doing a solo flat out one lap sprint around the ice. Trotz did it before game seven and Tampa Bay never had a chance after that according to one reporter. Knight General Manager George McPhee and his Capitals counterpart Brian MacLellan have a long history together. They grew up together in Guelph Ontario, were team mates on a Memorial Cup winning team from Guelph, were university roommates and co-workers for the Capitals. They were life long friends but that relationship has soured in recent years.

So then, here we go.

Monday May 28.

2017 – 18 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS SEMI FINALS

Both Series look even with the deciding factor likely to be goaltending.

Friday May 11 Washington 4 @ Tampa Bay 2: OK I forgot this was starting so soon and didn't even watch the game, silly me

Saturday May 12 Las Vegas 2 @ Winnipeg 4

Sunday May 13 Washington 2 @ Tampa Bay 4

  • 1

my bet: 4-3 WSH. 2-0 in series

  • 0

Fast mean game. I turned it off after two periods, feeling that Tampa Bay would not come back from the last minute.

  • 0

It could happen. Lots of good Russians (on both teams) with lots of names starting with K and ending with ov, and also Ovi.

Asleep @ The Wheel here, got busy gardening and didn't predict Wednesday game. I am doing a very poor job predicting anyway so I would probably have been wrong. As I see it, Washington is playing fast and mean, the only Lightning with any jam are Kunitz, Stralman, and Hedman ~ they better continue! Both goalies have been very shaky @ times.

Tampa Bay 4 @ Washington 5

Friday May 18

Winnipeg 3 @ Las Vegas 1
Winnipeg better win or they can turn out the lights because the party will nearly be over.

2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs Round Two

Thursday April 26

Pittsburgh 3 at Washington 1

San Jose 1 at Vegas 3

  • 0

I wish to see Win-Win-Jets vs. Ovi in finals

  • 0

Do you think Pittsburgh vs. Washington every year is a small copy of finals?

  • 0

Yes I do.

There are two series that would be super as cup Finals; Pittsburgh vs Washington, and Winnipeg vs Nashville.

It reminds me of when Edmonton and Calgary were very good and in the same years. Road trips to Alberta were called visiting Death Valley. Now the only death in Alberta is the playoff chances of both teams.

In those glorious years the absolute best hockey was Edmonton vs Calgary, it was usually in round 2, sometimes in round 1 and everyone was cheated of the best possible final. The hockey was great and the teams hated each other ~ made for fast, mean, great hockey.

  • 0

last night Winnipeg vs Nashville was a thriller! really enjoyable battle for my taste. playoffs as it should be.

  • 0

Wasn't that a great game? Our teams have a long way to go to challenge any of the eight teams still standing.

yes indeed! so glad to hear at least 4 more times crowd singing "O Canada" Anthem in white jerseys and a capella :)

Round One Thursday April 12

New Jersey @ Tampa Bay: Tampa Bay should win, they have a loaded lineup. New Jersey is fast fast fast but their goaltending might be a problem.

Toronto @ Boston: I look for this to be a fast, mean, series. Boston should win. Toronto can only win if the out score their defencemen's mistakes, which is unlikely.

Columbus @ Washington: Pretty even series. Washington usually plays well in the regular season and then folds in the playoffs; it could happen again. Columbus will surprise many fans who don't see them often. If goalie Bob regains his touch look for Tortarella to get one good run out of Columbus after saying they didn't seem to want to win

Colorado @ Nashville: Many folks have Smashville as favorites to win the entire thing. I don't know if Nathan MacKinnon can will the Avalanche to win this one.

San Jose @ Anaheim: This will be a real slugfest, neither team likes the other. It should be decided by the better goaltending. I don't like many Anaheim players but you have to give them their due, they dig down and play hard.

  • 1

Rylsky my friend.

Our teams are not in the Stanley Cup playoffs, are you going to watch anyway?

Should we make game and round predictions?

  • 3

Yes, I will. Just as usually, first I will support all teams from Canada. So now you know my choice what to watch first.
:)

PS
Not the bad season for 1 reason: finally I see super talented person in NYI, I mean Barzal and also we see promising goalie and Beau #72 grows fast. No need to cry, remember how it was with Chicago decade ago... Show must go on, Snow must go out :)

  • 2

I don't like the City of Toronto, but I really like their hockey team. Winnipeg has been overlooked and joked about for so long, but this year they are playing very well. A Toronto vs Winnipeg final would be great for you and me too ~ but tv ratings would plummet in America.

Barzal is having a super year and easily could be Rookie of The Year. Many Islanders are having good years, unlike Edmonton where only Connor has played as expected. Snow could / should be gone. The Oilers can't keep changing all the time, however Chiarelli and McLellan should not get too comfortable.

I will be watching Las Vegas, Winnipeg, and Toronto for pleasant surprises. Boston, Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, and Nashville should do well;( I hate LaViolette and Hartnell is quickly climbing my do not like list).

As has been proven many times, if you are in, you have a chance to win!

  • 0

What is wrong with the City Of Toronto. Lol.

I am excited about these playoffs - Winterpeg is going all the way this year. Book it! I have them in the final against the stupid Bruins.

Sadly my prediction would have my beloved leafs out in the first round again. The east if is a real nightmare this year. BTW - leaf tickets - single ticket price are around 500 bucks. That is a reason to hate the city of Toronto.

Rylsky if my leafs get bumped early maybe you could release a Zemira set to cheer me up. Lol!

Cheers

  • 0

The people in tawranna are amongst the most arrogant in the world, with very little justification. They believe that the sun rises, shines, and sets on them only. Beyond Mississagua nothing else matters to them. Case in point TSN and Brian Hayes. The Toronto Sports Network, and Hayes is the biggest pain in the ass. The Odog, Jamie and all the other staff are ok; one extra pain in the ass is the hostess of Leafs Lunch ~ Andi Petrillo, she was ok on Hockey Night in Canada, on TSN yucko.

  • 0

I see. I was forced to move here for a job and I love it. I don't really bother with The S Network - or any hockey or sports pundits for that matter, I just do my own analysis: the eye test. The leafs looked terrible last night

Fortunately Rylsky has treated us with a new Tasha set.

Cheers!

  • 0

Actually, reading what you and I wrote, I must do a partial retraction. My biggest beef is with Hayes and Petrillo. Some Torontonians are arrogant, the majority are likely pretty even keeled.

I gobble up just about anything sports related from many sources: tsn.ca, sportsnet.ca, espn.com. I watched Minnesota at Winnipeg so I didn't see much of the bruins and leafs. What did you think about Marchand kissing Komarov?

  • 0

looks like Marchand became the most "kisser-licker" in NHL history during this season.

  • 1

Friend Rylsky: Will you watch the playoffs on NHL.com, or...?

Here are my thoughts on the first three games.

1. Minnesota @ Winnipeg: Winnipeg has gone so long without an appearance or a win, this could be the start of a long run. Winnipeg is very deep with big, young, fast players. The big questions seem to be; can the goalie continue his fine regular season play, and can the players turn the other cheek and not get involved in after whistle scrums. Minnesota has tons of playoff experience, but their best defenceman Suter is done for the year and who can absorb his 27 to 30 minutes in regulation time let alone overtime? Staal was an absolute steal and is playing very well. Dubnyk blows hot and cold, he can steal you a win or more, but he also can be done in and get pulled.

2. Philadelphia @ Pittsburgh: It feels like Pittsburgh will be too much for Philadelphia to handle. However Giroux, Voracek, Simmonds, Gostisbehere, and Couturier have played big games on all stages during their careers. Lots of questions about Philadelphia's goalies; none (yet) about Pittsburgh's Murray.

3.Los Angeles @ Las Vegas. What a great year Las Vegas has had. No expansion team is likely to duplicate their fairy tale year. Los Angeles has tons of playoff experience, way more than Las Vegas; but Gerard Gallant has Las Vegas believing they can win. Fleury for Las Vegas and Quick for Los Angeles are very good goalies. Doughty and Kopitar are among] the best at their positions. It is a tossup and too hard to predict before the first game. Watching the game will give me a better idea going forward.

  • 0

It must have been a very interesting Islanders vs Red Wings game last night.

The Red Wings took a 5 minute major penalty for slashing and the Islanders scored 4 (four!) goals during the penalty. I like to see that when a mean or stupid play results in four goals. I don't think I have ever seen that.

60 or more years ago when there were only 6 teams in the NHL the Montreal Canadiens power play was so lethal that they often would score 2 or more goals during a two minute penalty. They were so good that the rules were changed so that one goal was all that was needed to end a MINOR penalty. I wonder how many they scored on a major penalty.

  • 0

Your Islanders are playing VERY nicely my friend. There is a tight grouping at the top of the league that changes day by day.

Today the top nine are: T Bay and Wpg 38, Nsh and LA 37, StL 36, Cbus and Tor 35, NYI and NJe 34. At the other end; Edm, Ott, Flo tied for 27 – 29 with 24. Big surprises Wpg, LA, NYI and NJe.

As individuals; Tavares, Lee, Barzal and...you know better than I do, are all playing very well. For the Oilers only McDavid and Nugent-Hopkins are doing much. Many people are writing off the Oilers and unless they go on a run like Montreal did, they are toast.

  • 0

Gloomy times in Edmonton.

The Oilers are soiling the bed sheets just now, capped off by a thrashing (8-3) last night in St. Louis!

There's plenty of blame to share, everybody including Connor played slow and disinterested.

Analysts are already saying their playoff hopes are nearly done after only 1/4 of the season.

Arrrggghhh! I am really concerned what will happen when they get home after their current road trip.

  • 0

Rylsky my friend.

You might find this interesting.

http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20171113-the-toy-camera-that-inspired-instagram

  • 0

Washington 5, Oilers 2. Highlight of the whole sorry mess was when Ovi bought a homeless shirtless man a hat, sweater and coat ~ good on him

  • 1

Very strange stats for Oilers at the start of the season... And very promising for Isles. Let's see what changes after first 20 games.

  • 0

There's a lot of whining and gnashing of teeth and talk about getting our swagger back.

The bottom line is the bottom six are very slow and the game isn't played that way right now.

I hope John T. continues to play very good.

A different team, the Devils, are getting raves about how fast they are.

The two newest arenas, Edmonton and now Detroit are beautiful ~ almost works of art. But the ice stinks in both arenas! That should be a crime.

Detroit has an excuse that they share home with a basketball team for 40+ games a year. Edmonton has first call for the building and only shares with stuff like professional bull riding and Garth Brooks.

  • 0

Football goalie blunders.

I had seen some of these, others not. I like #7, there's an old saying "keep your eye on the ball" he didn't.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iobTyCeYCJo

  • 0

Big news but potentially scary news!

The Oilers signed Leon Draisaitl to an eight year contract extension which totals US $68,000,000. The scary part is will there be enough money left over after Connor, Leon, and the other big dollar contracts?

The Oilers will have to be as inventive, and lucky, as Pittsburgh to load their roster with lower priced veterans who can still play; and rookies who are locked into entry level contracts for their first three years.

  • 0

Connor signed a nice contract extension. 8 years @ US $12.5 million per year. So, he'll be an Oiler for at least 9 more years.

  • 1

I see how Oiles follow the way to became #1 for years. Congrats

  • 0

I'm not 100% convinced. Pittsburgh and Sidney, Malkin et al will be good for years.

The team that scares and impresses me is Toronto. I hate the city but love the hockey team. So many great young players, some even younger than Connor (Matthews, Marner and not sure how old Nylander is). Then they just signed Marleau. If they get more defencemen who listen to Babcock, they too could be good for years.

Until they drop the first puck in 2017-2018, everyone is tied for first.

  • 0

I just re read what I wrote and it's pretty harsh.

I don't hate the city, but I do resent the one way bias of most Toronto reporters. I get most of my coverage from local media in Edmonton and TSN.ca. The TSN reporters even joke that it's not called Toronto Sports Network for no reason.

I still like watching the Leafs.

  • 0

Big trade between the Oilers and Islanders, Eberle for Strome. Eberle might get to play with Tavares, Strome might get to play with McDavid or Draisaitl.

Connor had a good night in Las Vegas, scoring title, most valuable player selected by the players and most valuable player selected by the media.

Next comes the draft, Oilers pick 22nd and Islanders traded their 15th pick to Las Vegas. Watch for trades and signings before or just after the draft.

  • 0

I had strange feeling about Isles moves and trades this month... I really think we going wrong way. But I always hoping for the best.
:)

  • 0

I can't figure out their trades either. And then they trade Hamonic to Calgary, ouch. The Oilers signed Russell but you can't have too many defensemen. I hope Chiarelli and Oilers fans don't regret that.

  • 0

ROUND FOUR

JUNE 11

I was at a birthday supper and didn't see the Penguins win the CUP. It sounds like a very tight game and the first (winning) goal wasn't scored until late in the third period.

Much of the talk after the game was about how great, or at least loud, Nashville and their fans were. TSN gave a guided tour of Tootsies and showed how there was a bar, a band, and rowdy fans on every floor including the rooftop.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/duthie-s-tour-of-tootsie-s~1144017

ROUND THREE

THURSDAY MAY 25

PITTSBURGH 3, OTTAWA 2, (2 OT) - Pittsburgh wins the 7th game and advances to the Stanley Cup Final.

What a great game. Both goalies were great, both teams played their hearts out. It was not a game for a nervous person like me, but it was so much better to see the game played for as long as required rather than going to a shoot out.

  • 0

ROUND THREE

MONDAY MAY 22

NASHVILLE 6, ANAHEIM 3

Nashville wins the best of 7 semi final 4-2 and are off to the final. VERY happy to see this mainly because I don't like Getzlaf, Perry and Kesler - the other Anaheim players are o k; as a matter of fact I quite like some of them.

Anaheim was all over Nashville for the entire game, but Nashville scored on two very early goals to go up 2-0. They also lead 3-1, but Anaheim tied it at 3-3 with 12 minutes left. Nashville shocked Anaheim by scoring the final 3 goals. Rinne was spectacular in goal for Nashville, Sissons scored 3, Watson scored 2 and Nashville overcame the loss of their two top centres Johansen and Fisher for games 5 and 6.

  • 1

YES, it was great game. I wish to see finals Smashville vs. Sens

  • 0

Either Ottawa or Pittsburgh against Smashville should be good, and probably a way less dirty stuff than if Anaheim was involved.

  • 1

My oh my, what a game #7 it was... 2nd OT winner, heartbreaking, but they deserve it...
Now I will support Preds for sure.

  • 0

I am with you, Pittsburgh has won the Cup, Nashville hasn't.

I hope the final series is just like game 7 of Ottawa and Pittsburgh, fast and no cheap shots unlike how Anaheim would have played.

  • 0

WEDNESDAY MAY 10

WASHINGTON 4, PITTSBURGH 1

EDMONTON 4, ANAHEIM 2

  • 0

WASHINGTON 4, PITTSBURGH 1: Pittsburgh 2, Washington 0; Pittsburgh wins the best of seven series 4-3. Obviously Fleury played the most important role, if you don't score you can't win.

EDMONTON 4, ANAHEIM 2: Anaheim 2, Edmonton 1. The Oilers got an early and lucky goal. Anaheim owned the 2nd and 3rd periods. Talbot is the only reason that the score wasn't 5-1 or worse. McDavid will be better in the future. Truthfully, he was a non factor in Games 6 and 7.

  • 1

Oh yes, spectacular night to see 2 battles for sirvive. My heart was with Oilers. But I am sure this team could be champions soon. Now it was just the beginning of Great Oilers return.

  • 1

The Oilers future DOES look bright (if we can get rid of some high paid flops like Eberle and Pouliot).

The team that really has the potential to be good eventually is Toronto. They need some more defencemen but they have an amazing bunch of young forwards, and Coach Mike Babcock is stellar.

  • 1

OK, let's choose our favorite team for semifinals this season. I will vote for Canadian team. So this is Ottawa.
:)

  • 1

TUESDAY MAY 9

NYR 4, OTTAWA 1

Ottawa needs to end their MSG jinx, or it's back to Ottawa for a dreaded Game 7

  • 1

TUESDAY MAY 9

NYR 4, OTTAWA 1: Ottawa 4, NYR 2

VERY glad to be wrong on this one! Karlsson played super, goalie Anderson was spectacular; no dreaded Game 7.

  • 0

MONDAY MAY 8

PITTSBURGH 3, WASHINGTON 1

It's now or never (again) for Washington.

  • 1

PITTSBURGH 3, WASHINGTON 1: Washington 5. Pittsburgh 2

It's now or never (again) for Washington.

Washington totally dominated, racing off to a 5-0 lead before Pittsburgh scored 2 late goals. I'll have to mull over injuries etc. before I make my prediction for Game 7.

  • 1

SUNDAY MAY 7

NASHVILLE 4, ST. LOUIS 2

EDMONTON 4, ANAHEIM 3

Nashville better close this out and not risk going back to St. Louis.

Is it time for some McMagic? As is usual there are no hints how many (if any) of the usual Oilers defencemen will be able to play. All bets are off if a bunch of them can't play.

  • 1

SUNDAY MAY 7

NASHVILLE 4, ST. LOUIS 2: Nashville 3, St. Louis 1. Both goalies were very good. Low scoring game, 2-1 for Nashville until they scored into an empty net with about 1 minute remaining.

EDMONTON 4, ANAHEIM 3: Edmonton 7, Anaheim 1. There was some magic only it was from Draisaitl and Letestu.Leon had 3 goals and 2 assists, Mark had 2 goals and 2 assists. Connor did not have a point. 2 starting defencemen (Sekera and Klefbom) did not play. 2 relatively un-used men (Gryba and Reinhart) played 12 minutes each. I wish we could have saved some goals for Game 1.

reinhardt)replaced them

  • 0

SATURDAY MAY 6

OTTAWA 3, NYR 2

PITTSBURGH 3, WASHINGTON 1

Ottawa has to play better or they are toast!

It's now or never (again) for Washington.

  • 1

OTTAWA 3, NYR 2: Ottawa 5, NYR 4 (OT) Neither goalie played very well, Karlsson was very good for Ottawa. The over-time winner bounced off of about four players including Lundqvist. Neil pounded Glass into the crossbar after Glass demolished Phaneuf.

PITTSBURGH 3, WASHINGTON 1: Washington 4, Pittsburgh 2. Pittsburgh surprised me by dressing Sid. Washington surprised me by scoring three straight in the third period.

  • 0

FRIDAY MAY 5

NASHVILLE 3, ST. LOUIS 2

ANAHEIM 4, EDMONTON 2

I'm not sure if Coach Yeo can motivate the Blues into competing harder and smarter.

The Oilers keep talking a lot, but I don't believe them. Too many passengers on the team to attempt to compete against the Ducks who are playing in “big boy” mode.

  • 1

FRIDAY MAY 5

NASHVILLE 3, ST. LOUIS 2: St. Louis 2, Nashville 1. Low scoring, tight checking; yet both goalies played well.

ANAHEIM 4, EDMONTON 2: Anaheim 4, Edmonton 2 (2OT). Oilers defencemen were dropping like flies, 4 left with injuries, 3 returned. Oilers were up 3-0 with around 4 minutes left in the game, and Anaheim pulled their goalie. They scored one goal and put him back in for the face-off, pulled him again and scored again. They pulled him again and scored to tie it 3-3 with 15 seconds left in the 3rd period. Oilers challenged for goalie interference but the fools who judge those things decided AGAIN that there was no interference. Almost every player on both teams was running on fumes by the time the winning goal was scored in overtime period 2.

ARRRGGGHHH!

  • 0

WEDNESDAY MAY 3

WASHINGTON 4, PITTSBURGH 2

ANAHEIM 4, EDMONTON 2

Malkin often plays well when Crosby is missing, we shall see. I expect a hard mean game.

Edmonton has too many players who can't or won't play the way that is required to win in the playoffs.

  • 1

WASHINGTON 4, PITTSBURGH 2: Pittsburgh 3, Washington 2

ANAHEIM 4, EDMONTON 2: Anaheim 4, Edmonton 3 (OT)

I'm pleasantly surprised that Pittsburgh won without Sid.

I'm so pissed off I can hardly type. Many controversial calls went the Ducks way, but what I am angriest about is that Eberle cost us one goal with cowardice and the ripple effect carried over to many of the Oilers. Getzlaf ran rough shod over us and nobody was able to contain him.

  • 0

TUESDAY MAY 2

OTTAWA 4, NYR 2

NASHVILLE 4, ST. LOUIS 2

  • 1

OTTAWA 4, NYR 2: NYR 4, Ottawa 1

NASHVILLE 4, ST. LOUIS 2: Nashville 2, St. Louis 1

I didn't get to see either game but what I have read indicated NYR jumped on Ottawa early and completely controlled the game.

Hard, borderline dirty game in Nashville. It seems that St. Louis' discipline caught up to them, and Ellis scored a power play goal to open the scoring.

  • 0

ROUND TWO

MONDAY MAY 1:

PITTSBURGH 3, WASHINGTON 1

It's now or never for the Caps. My wish list remains the same, close checking and fast hockey, Kuznetsov gets zero goals and maybe gets clobbered for good measure.

  • 1

MONDAY MAY 1:

PITTSBURGH 3, WASHINGTON 1: Washington3, Pittsburgh 2 (OT)

Everything that could go wrong, did. Less than 6 minutes into the game Niskanen cross checks Sid in the face and he didn't return. Kuznetsov scores a goal. The Pens score twice in the last two minutes to force overtime where the much maligned Shattenkirk scores on a power play.

It will be VERY interesting to see what, if anything, the NHL Player Safety Department does. Imho a multi game suspension is warranted. It's interesting that Sid's first documented concussion also was in a game against Washington

SUNDAY APRIL 30

NASHVILLE 4, ST. LOUIS 2

EDMONTON 5, ANAHEIM 3

Nashville weathered the storm in St. Louis, let's see if they play the way that LaViolette prefers.

Picking the Oilers with my heart, not my head. Talbot was instrumental in their two wins in Anaheim. The fans will be hyper and that can help or hinder the team. Anaheim really out played us in games 1 and 2, but McLellan has last change. Time to see if Connor can burn some of the slow Ducks.

SATURDAY APRIL 29

OTTAWA 3, NYR 2: Ottawa 6, NYR 5 (2OT)

WASHINGTON 3, PITTSBURGH 1: Pittsburgh 6, Washington 2

Wow, I didn't see either of these scores coming! J-G Pageau scored 4 goals, a natural hat trick including the overtime winner. Obviously neither goalie was lights out, but Lundqvist was really shaky.

Sid only had two assists but his efforts defensively must have inspired the Pens, Kessel and Guentzel scored twice each. Pens are without their best defenceman (Letaing) and their starting goalie (Murray) but are just rolling up the Caps.

SATURDAY APRIL 29

OTTAWA 3, NYR 2

WASHINGTON 3, PITTSBURGH 1

It will be interesting to see if Ottawa has a sellout or, again, many empty seats.

Washington has too many good players not to start scoring, as long as Kuznetsov isn't one that does.

ROUND TWO

FRIDAY APRIL 28

NASHVILLE 3, ST. LOUIS 2

EDMONTON 4, ANAHEIM 2

I'm a believer, at least for a little while, in Nashville.

Picking with my heart not my head. It will either be a close low scoring game, or an out and out war with the Oilers giving as much as they receive in the hits. Of course thugs like Getzlaf will look for smaller Oilers to hit, instead of manning up and trying Lucic, Maroon, Kassian, Larsson, Pouliot et al. Once a punk, always a punk.

  • 0

FRIDAY APRIL 28

NASHVILLE 3, ST. LOUIS 2: St. Louis 3, Nashville 2

EDMONTON 4, ANAHEIM 2: Edmonton 2, Anaheim 1

Tarasenko had 2 goals and Jake Allen was very good in goal for St. Louis.

Cam Talbot was fantastic in goal for the Oilers and 2 goals was just barely enough. Not as much stupid thuggery by Anaheim.

THURSDAY APRIL 27

OTTAWA 3, NYR 1: Ottawa 2, NYR 1

PITTSBURGH 4, WASHINGTON 2: Pittsburgh 3, Washington 2

Lundqvist was spectacular and kept NYR in the game. Karlsson scored late from behind the goal line for the win.

Sid had 2 , Ovi had 1, Bonino scored the winner with 7:24 left. Fleury stood on his head, without his stick to preserve the win.

2017 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS

ROUND TWO

WEDNESDAY APRIL 26

ST. LOUIS 3, NASHVILLE 1

EDMONTON 4, ANAHEIM 2

Eight teams gone, eight teams remain. Look for mainly tight checking low scoring games. Above choices subject to change (before game time) if any weird last minute injuries occur.

WEDNESDAY APRIL 26

ST. LOUIS 3, NASHVILLE 1: Nashville 4, St. Louis 3

EDMONTON 4, ANAHEIM 2: Edmonton 5, Anaheim 3

I'll have to start believing in Nashville, much as I don't like their coach.

Hard and mean game. Edmonton fought back from a deficit to take a 3 - lead and, poof, in 90 seconds or so it was tied. A save or two by Talbot and the game would have been so much easier on my old heart. Anaheim punks like Kesler and especially Getzlaf tried to stir the pot and pick on smaller players in the last seconds. I have always hated Getzlaf (except when he plays for Canada) and tonight was another example why I do.

EDMONTON 4, SAN JOSE 2: Edmonton 4, San Jose 3 (OT)

Pittsburgh led 3 - 0, Columbus fought back to 3 - 2 but Pittsburgh held on.
Good game, Lundqvist played very good.
Everyone said avoid Chicago, Nashville said bring it on.
San Jose led 3 - 1 but the Oilers rallied to tie and Desharnais scored the overtime winner.

Pittsburgh and Nashville get to rest and hope the others beat each other up.

WEDNESDAY APRIL 19

TORONTO 3, WASHINGTON 2

OTTAWA 4, BOSTON 1

ST. LOUIS 3, MINNESOTA 1

ANAHEIM 4, CALGARY 2

Picking Toronto with my heart not my head, their speed seems to be unsettling Washington. Alzner's absence a big loss for Washington. I hope someone whacks Kuznetsov really HARD!

IF Ottawa gets up early in this one they will not ease up on the gas.

I feel sorry for Dubnyk and poor old Boudreau, this might be a hard mess to overcome.

In a fairytale world, Calgary could be up 3 – 0, instead it's the opposite. I was hoping they would extend and lean on Anaheim, doesn't seem likely but there's always a chance for a mini revival.

TORONTO 3, WASHINGTON 2: Washington 5, Toronto 4

OTTAWA 4, BOSTON 1: Ottawa 1, Boston 0

ST. LOUIS 3, MINNESOTA 1: Minnesota 2, St. Louis 0

ANAHEIM 4, CALGARY 2: Anaheim 3, Calgary 1

How could Toronto not show up early in the most important game in their young lives?
It's about time that Ottawa didn't get whizzed on by the hockey gods.
Good for Dubnyk and Boudreau, too little too late but they played and tried unlike the pitiful Calgary effort.
Calgary could have dome someone a favor by extending Anaheim, didn't happen.

I hope Pittsburgh wins before Tortarella and Columbus go away over the line.
It's not likely a shutout, maybe Kassian can get another winner ~ would be sweet if he did.

ROUND ONE

MONDAY APRIL 17

BOSTON 3, OTTAWA 1

WASHINGTON 4, TORONTO 2

CHICAGO 5, NASHVILLE 2

CALGARY 3, ANAHEIM 1

Methot and Borowiecki are hurt / out, Rask is trying not to choke; we shall see.

Washington 3 – 2 and then an empty net goal.

Chicago better smarten up or the season is lost, I hate Laviolette but his teams are disciplined.

Picking Calgary with my heart, not my head. I hope Tkachuk punches out Kesler.

MONDAY APRIL 17

BOSTON 3, OTTAWA 1: Ottawa 4, Boston 3 (OT)

WASHINGTON 4, TORONTO 2: Toronto 4, Washington 3 (OT)

CHICAGO 5, NASHVILLE 2: Nashville 3, Chicago 2 (OT)

CALGARY 3, ANAHEIM 1: Anaheim 5, Calgary 4 (OT)

Ottawa raced to an early 3 - 0 lead, Boston rallied to tie the game; nice goal by Ryan for the winner. On the first Ottawa goal Karlsson made one of the undoubted best passes in the history of the game to send Hoffman in for a break away.

Toronto are giving Washington fits, glad I was wrong.

Stick a fork in them, Chicago is done (maybe). Los Angeles for one has come back from a 0 - 3 deficit and one the cup.

Calgary was up 4 - 2 after two periods, don't know what went wrong.

EDMONTON 3, SAN JOSE 1: Edmonton 2, San Jose 0

I only saw the Montreal and Edmonton games. The Montreal game was heavy and intense and both goalies were good. Another weird line change. Lundqvist stopped the puck at the end line, whipped it up the left side and less than 5.5 seconds total it was in the net.

Edmonton hit everyone in sight but took too many penalties again. The penalty killing was great with two shorties.
Kassian had his best game as an Oiler and deservedly was the first star, McDavid was second star as they both had shorties. Klefbom blocked a wrist shot from Burns and didn't return. We need Oscar.

2017 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS

ROUND ONE

THURSDAY APRIL 13

WASHINGTON 5, TORONTO 2

CHICAGO 4, NASHVILLE 3

ANAHEIM 3, CALGARY 1

  • 1

Great! I will do my predictions today later, and I hope to be free to watch Oilers game #2 tonight.

THURSDAY APRIL 13

WASHINGTON 5, TORONTO 2: Washington 3, Toronto 2 (OT)

CHICAGO 4, NASHVILLE 3: Nashville 1, Chicago 0

ANAHEIM 3, CALGARY 1: Anaheim 3, Calgary 2

The two remaining Canadian based teams lost, Woe Canada. I was quite busy so I just saw bits and pieces of the games and none of the Nashville - Chicago game.

Toronto was ahead 2-0 and managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Rinne and Crawford must both have been very good. Calgary took 7 penalties which ultimately cost them the game. They also made a bad 5 man change that lead to a 3 on 0 breakaway which commentators and coaches don't remember seeing often or ever.

  • 0

Here are my picks for the first round of the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs. I might be picking with my heart, not my head for some of these. It's early days and we will know more after a few games as the teams start to establish their plans and injuries sadly start to have an impact.

2017 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS

ROUND ONE

WEDNESDAY APRIL 12

Boston 3, Ottawa 1

Montreal 4, New York 2

Pittsburgh 3, Columbus 2

St. Louis 4, Minnesota 2

Edmonton 3, San Jose 2

  • 0

Boston 3, Ottawa 1: Final Boston 2, Ottawa 1

Montreal 4, New York: Final New York 2, Montreal 0

Pittsburgh 3, Columbus 2: Final Pittsburgh 3, Columbus 1

St. Louis 4, Minnesota: Final St. Louis 2, Minnesota 1 (OT)

Edmonton 3, San Jose: Final San Jose 3, Edmonton2 (OT) OUCH!

All three Canadian teams lost. I watched the Ottawa - Boston game. It was a great game, very fast with lots of hitting and good goal tending.

The Oilers had a great first period but took too many penalties. The Sharks owned the game from then on. Hard hitting but undisciplined play caught up with the Oilers.

  • 0

Finally!

The Oilers are in the playoffs for the first time in 11 years.

Now they have to continue to press and garner as many points as possible and get home ice advantage for any upcoming series.

  • 1

Congrats! I was sure right after 20 first games this season and I am so glad because it is my 2nd fav club in the NHL. I will support them in all games except vs. Isles:)

  • 0

Big game tonight, my friend.

  • 0

Kudos to the Islanders, they played like they wanted and NEEDED to win.

Dismal performance by the Oilers, thought they just had to step on the ice and they would win; WRONG!

  • 0

Just to compound my grumpiness, the low overnight was -29 C (-20 F) and it's snowing quite heavily.

  • 0

The Oilers are playing good just now, but Calgary scares me!

The Oilers depend so much on Connor, while it seems that Calgary has a more balanced roster.

It would be super to see both Edmonton and Calgary make the playoffs and set up a battle of Alberta. It also would be super to see one or both of San Jose and Anaheim miss the playoffs, not much chance of that though.

There are many games left and it should be nail biting to see who makes it and who doesn't in the Pacific.

  • 0

While I have been moaning about the Oilers' inconsistency, the Islanders have played very well since changing their coach.

They stumbled against Toronto, but bounced right back and beat the Rangers.

I wonder if our host has some more lovely ladies in Islanders' jerseys?

  • 0

Oilers come off their mandated five day break Saturday night against Chicago.

Historically they have slumped badly in the first game at home after a road trip and that is at most a two day break. Five days, ouch, plenty of time to get out of rhythm or sync.

Two things I hope to see:

1. Connor shoots more often.

2. Somebody, anybody, capitalize on all the open space created when so much attention is paid to Connor. Said person should shoot shoot shoot and not worry about feeding Connor, he will generate plenty of chances for himself.

  • 0

5-1 for Chicago!

Oilers stunk and it's all too predictable. First game back from a road trip, or after a long break; they don't show up.

Lots of talk about "we have to do this, we have to do that". Instead of talking they to start doing.

  • 0

Oilers vs San Jose, puck drop in five minutes.

If we win we are tied for first place in the Pacific Division. If we lose, grrrrr.

  • 1

I like this team alot now.
:)

Isles also started playing MUCH better last weeks. Hope to see them in playoffs as well as Oilers. Maybe classic orange-blue StanleyCUp final at last?

  • 0

The Isles are certainly playing much better.

My chief concern is ownership. Owners who think they know hockey and influence personnel decisions are frustrating. Mr. Wang meddled and it looks like some of the new ownership might also. Katz meddled in Edmonton and we chose Yakupov instead of a defence man. That turned out ok only because we were so bad we ending up getting Connor.

Owners should be VERY involved in choosing General Managers and CEOs, CFOs etc but leave the player decisions to the GM you chose.

  • 0

Yip yip, yip yip, YAHOO OO!

1-1, 2-1, 4-1.

Tied with San Jose for first in the Pacific Division @ the All Star break.

  • 0

I will be making my first and probably only 2016 - 2017 visit to Rogers Place on January 18 when the Oilers play the Florida Panthers.

I hope it's a good and fast game played on good ice. Also it would be nice if the Oilers got the lead early and didn't have to play catch up or go into overtime.

  • 0

Congratulations to the Excited States for winning the 2016 - 2017 WJC.

I was shovelling snow but the results look like it was quite a game.

  • 1

Oh yes, 2 dramatic series of shootout for USA : semifinal and final, somebody said it is lottery, but this is skill and psychology.

Congrats to USA from me as well.

  • 0

I agree.

The skill part is obvious, the psychology part is more subtle; do you shoot first - do you make the other team shoot first, do you put your best shooters up early or save your absolute best for later, do you bring in your non starting goalie because they are better in shoot outs,...

Congratulations to the 2015 / 2016 Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

Even though I would have won more money if San Jose had won, I am happy to see a FAST team defeat a large and heavy hitting team.

My Oilers are fast. Now all they need to do is trade for or entice some skilled players with the chance to play in the newest and hopefully best arena in the NHL. New players who would like to play with Connor McDavid.

2016 Stanley Cup Final Round Predictions.

Game 6:

Pittsburgh better win! Even though a Game 7 would be at home for them, strange things happen in a single game decides everything scenario. Also, Murray better deliver. If he plays nervously and Pittsburgh loses; then who does Sullivan start in Game 7?

San Jose can't expect Jones to win them another game like in Game 5. San Jose can't keep up speed wise and will have a tough time competing.

Pittsburgh 5, San Jose 2.

  • 0

Pens 3, San Jose 4.

  • 1

An amazing 1st game for Russia in the Euros football tournament. England dominated the whole game but scored only one goal during regular time. The Russian team scored the equaliser in the first minute of stoppage time. The Russian team refused to quit and stole a win from the English. Good for them.

  • 1

Yes, we are happy here
:)

  • 0

Unhappy news from France. French police report that Russian football fans engaged in violence after the Russian team's great performance in the tie game with England. This kind of hooliganism is simply not necessary. Such hooligans should tie on some football shoes or skates and participate in sports.

  • 2

Trust me, Neil, English fans are not angels at all as well. It's just bad day when 2 fans groups meet each other and they both are crazy. Yesterday I watched football with 70+ Englishmen and we was 100% friendly and drink after BOTH goals and shake hands after the game ending. Totally friendly atmosphere between Eng and Rus fans.

  • 1

There was hooliganism on the previous day too. I am not specifically criticizing the Russian fans. These thugs should try to participate in the game or go sit down and shut up. There is something very special about international sports. It is wrong to spoil it with violence.

  • 1

true

  • 0

@ Neil, and Rylsky

Wait until you see what happens IF fans from countries that truly hate each other should happen to meet.

1. Poland IF they happen to meet Germany or Russia.

2. Ukraine IF they happen to meet Russia (maybe even Germany).

3. Russia IF they happen to meet Germany, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary,

4. Any country formed from the former Yugoslavia (Croatia., and…) IF they happen to meet Turkey, Austria, Germany or...

And the list goes on

  • 0

Baggy Pants,
You missed the point. There is simply no room for this kind of violence in international sports. International sport is elegant and sophisticated. The Russian team stood toe to toe and eye to eye against a technically superior team and fought to a draw. They played the game to the very end and proved themselves equal to the "better" English squad. They should be proud of their effort. Instead, a bunch of assholes and drunken thugs robbed them of their honor. Disgraceful!

  • 1

Neil:

I read your comments and missed ZERO points.

You wrote in part “International sport is elegant and sophisticated.” I reply that international sport SHOULD be elegant and sophisticated. The sad truth is that international sport is rife with cheating, scandals, and dirty dealings.

Soccer played by women is usually elegant and sophisticated. Soccer played by men SOMETIMES is elegant and sophisticated; at other times the men cheat as much as FIFA officials do.

Many fans of Nations I mentioned act like thugs and hooligans both inside the stadium and outside.

I hope the violence is over, but I doubt it.

  • 1

Another very sad day.

MY FAVORITE hockey player, Gordie Howe, passed away today at the age of 88.

http://www.tsn.ca/gordie-howe-1928-2016-1.504811

I have to gather my thoughts and memories; for now just know that he was the favorite hockey player of Wayne Gretzky.

Follow the links if you're interested and read or listen to what many people wrote and said about Mr. Hockey.

  • 1

Sad news. Legendary hockey player Gordie Howe past away this morning, at the age of 88. A great life lived well.

  • 0

Thanks Neil. This is proof positive that one should never assume, and you know how the rest of that goes. . .

I mistakenly assumed that Rylsky and I were the only ones who would notice and care about Gordie's passing

  • 1

OH NO!!! the Legend!

RIP...

:(

  • 0

Two memories I have of Gordie Howe, different from any you are likely to read or hear from other admirers.

1. He was ambidextrous, I saw a film clip of him shooting the puck the length of the ice (usually 200 feet) with his one stick both right handed and left handed. His entire stick was wooden and straight bladed.

2. My Mother was a Boston Bruin fan (I loved her anyway). We went to see the parade for the annual exhibition when Gordie was the Honorary Marshall. Mother yelled out "Hi Gordie"; and I swear it seemed like he looked directly at her and yelled "hi" back at her.

2016 Stanley Cup Final Round Predictions.

2016 Stanley Cup Final Round Predictions.

Full Disclosure ~ I like both teams equally, but San Jose has never been in the finals until this year. I also have an extra incentive to pull for San Jose. I still enter one hockey pool where I used to work, and I got San Jose. The money is not huge, but bragging rights count a little bit, eh.

I'm going into this just like everyone else, we will have to see how the teams match up.

Pittsburgh is very fast, Crosby, Malkin, and Letang are playing good. Murray is solid in goal. The defence might be a little banged up, Daley is out, and Letang will have to play big minutes. If Murray falters, then Fleury will play; and that could be BIG trouble for the Penguins. Fleury has had many stinkers in playoff hockey over the last 5 or 6 years.

San Jose is playing very good just now. They are not as fast, but have four lines that can be played with no fears. The top two lines are excellent! The defence is lead by Burns and Vlasic, both of whom are VERY good! Jones is solid in goal. Their backup goalie, Reimer, is also a bit of a question mark like Fleury for Pittsburgh.

Game 1:

I'm guessing just like everyone else:

San Jose 3, Pittsburgh 2.

Game 1 Final Score:

Pittsburgh 3, San Jose 2.

My Prediction:

San Jose 3, Pittsburgh 2
Correct score, wrong teams; Pittsburgh smoked San Jose!

Nashville @ San Jose

One final chance to see if Nashville's four elite defensemen and world class goalie can prevail over San Jose's balanced attack with many players who can score on a one time shot.

San Jose 4 Nashville 2 (one empty net goal by San Jose).

  • 0

For me now is clear who will get my support in conf finals:
Bolts and Blues. So nice that both teams leaders now are Russians. But it's not the main reason for me.

  • 0

Wednesday May 11

St. Louis @ Dallas

It's now or never for both teams. I predict a heavy, bruising game.

St. Louis 3 Dallas 2 Overtime

  • 0

Monday May 9

Dallas @ St. Louis

Dallas misses Seguin, Benn can't do it on his own. St. Louis edge in goal.

St. Louis 3 Dallas 1

San Jose @ Nashville

Too much Pavelski, too much fire power on San Jose.

San Jose 4 Nashville 1
At Least 1 maybe 2 empty net goals for San Jose.

  • 0

I'm planting part of my garden, so this will be quick; I haven't even checked partial scores.

Saturday May 7

NYI @ Tampa Bay

We need to give Rylsky a chance to be at Barclays for one or some games.

NYI 4 Tampa Bay 1

  • 0

The NYI - Tampa Bay game is on Sunday.

Efffing newspaper!

2/3 Saturday games predictions.

Pittsburgh @ Washington.

Pittsburgh3 Washington 1

Nashville @ San Jose

San Jose 5 Nashville 1

  • 0

I do believe in NYI win in Tampa, but I am not so optimistic in score. It must be win in OT after 2 OT losses.

  • 0

Friday May 6

Tampa Bay @ NY Islanders: I still think Tavares is playing as good as, or better than, anyone else. A wee concern about Greiss.

NYI 3 Tampa Bay 1

  • 0

Thursday May 5

San Jose @ Nashville: I am still going to write that Nashville's 4 elite defensemen and Rinne in goal are going to prevail. San Jose has the natural, one touch, scorers though.

Nashville 3 San Jose 2

Dallas @ St. Louis

Dallas has two goaltenders who are very unpredictable, while Elliott has been solid so far. Benn is very good but he can't do it by himself.

St. Louis 3 Dallas 1

  • 0

Wednesday May 4

Washington @ Pittsburgh: Minus Letang and Maatta(?), this is a good chance for Washington to tie the series. It all depends on Murray.

Washington 4 Pittsburgh 3

  • 1

agree about chance, but they will not use it.
Caps2 Pens4

  • 0

Good call Rylsky; Pens 3 Caps 2 in overtime.

  • 0

Tuesday May 3:

Tampa Bay @ NYI: I still believe that Tavares can and will lead the Islanders to victory. Bishop gives Tampa Bay an advantage in goal though.

NYI 3 Tampa Bay 1

Dallas @ St. Louis

It's time for St. Louis to get returns on all the heavy hitting they have been doing. Elliott is steadier that either Dallas goalie.

St. Louis 4 Dallas 1

San Jose @ Nashville

Despite their 4 elite defensemen and Rinne in goal, Nashville hasn't covered big Joe and little Joe nearly well enough. Jones is quietly giving San Jose winning goaltending. Nashville is short of one time scorers.

San Jose 3 Nashville 1

  • 0

Monday May 2:

Washington at Pittsburgh: If Maatta can't play, Letang is going to be very tired at the end of the game. If Schultz has to play, someone is going to be very tired covering up for him. Ovi is due to break out. Should be a very fast game.

Washington 4 Pittsburgh 1

  • 0

Sunday May 1

St. Louis @ Dallas: Goaltending decides this one.

St. Louis 2 Dallas1

Nashville @ San Jose: I still think Nashville's four excellent defensemen and Rinne will prevail.

Nashville 3 San Jose 1

  • 0

Saturday, April 30

NYI @ Tampa Bay: Tavares has been the most impressive player so far. If Capuano keeps his eye on the puck, he might just see another Islanders win. After beating the Panthers, why not clean out all of Florida. Bishop will be better though.

NYI 2 Tampa Bay 1

Pittsburgh @ Washington: Trotz has everybody buying into responsible defensive play. Holtby is very good. Pittsburgh better not go down 2 games, if they want to win. If Murray plays better Pittsburgh has a chance, if he doesn't “turn out the lights, the party's over.”

Pittsburgh 1 Washington 4

  • 0

I would have done very poorly if I had known when Round One games were scheduled. Let's see if I learned anything.

Stanley Cup Playoffs

Second Round

St. Louis @ Dallas: Can Hitchcock get Tarasenko to buy into short shifts and more attention to defensive play? Can Dallas go all out for goals when defensive play is usually the norm? Should be a hard and heavy game. Slight edge to St. Louis because of Elliot in goal.

St. Louis 3 Dallas 1

Nashville @ San Jose: Will San Jose disappoint their fans again, or will quiet and calm deBoer keep them in focus? Nashville has four elite defensemen, a world class goalie and few one shot scorers. Nashville has no beards to compare with Burns and Thornton

Nashville 1 San Jose 3

  • 1

for series: i hope Isles win series 4 to 2
washington will beat Pens 4-3 in series

2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs

Now that we need only a winner between Nashville and Anaheim, I will try to be more consistent and make predictions for all games ~ all series.

  • 0

And don't forget to rise your cup for NYI for their 1st win in playoff series since 1993. yesyesyes!!!

:)

  • 0

I'll drink to that, and to seeing you enjoying some game(s) live at Barclays.

  • 0

Friend Rylsky:

Does your trip to New York depend entirely on the Islanders making the playoffs?

Do you still want to predict the game and series results for the final 16 teams?

  • 1

HI, Baggy!
end of regular season looks very impressive for NYI, and yesterday we won (for the first time in history) all games vs. Rangers during 1 season. I am happy!
Yes, I will try to visit NY this spring to see playoffs and maybe to travel around US. And I will also try to see World Cup in Autumn (in Canada).

It was very spectacular show how Oilers said goodbye to old hockey arena of Edmonton. I wish your next season will be same successful (solid in defense as main!!!) as for NYI on their new Barclays Brooklyn arena. You have so many young stars, let's do the good team!

cheers!

  • 0

Hey Rylsky:

I missed seeing that the Islanders beat the Rangers in all their games this past season, good stuff!

I will post my predictions again, and we can have a laugh or ... to see how I do this time around.

Big speculation in Edmonton that one or more of Eberle, Hall, or Nugent-Hopkins will be traded to get a really good defence man.

I also saw a story that the Islanders don't like the ice at Barclay's. Barclay's have hired the best ice maker for hockey there ever was (Dan Craig) to try to fix the ice.

2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs

Wednesday April 13

Detroit @ Tampa Bay: Detroit Win 3-2

N Y R @ Pittsburgh: Pittsburgh Win 4-2

Chicago @ St. Louis: St. Louis Win 3-1

  • 1

well done. only 1 missed (DET)

I hope to see today:

NYI win over FLA 4-2
DAL win (MIN) 5-1
WSH win (PHI) 5-2
LAK win (SJS) 2-1

  • 0

I'll try today as:

WSH over PHI 3-1
FLA over NYI 2-1
DAL over MIN 3-1
LAK over SJS 2-0

  • 0

Friend Rylsky:

The Islanders and Oilers play Sunday morning (February 7). Will you get a chance to see the game?

  • 0

My friend, I have no chances till May to visit US or Canada. But this game will be in my "must see on TV" list on February!

  • 0

No doubt who the better team WAS and WILL BE for a very long time.

The Oilers were so bad that the Islanders' fans should demand and get their money back.

  • 0

what it was? OMG... 8-1... Worst game of Oilers ever?

  • 0

Not quite their worst loss ever. In 1983-84 they won their first Stanley Cup, yet in that regular season they lost 11-0 to Hartford (now Carolina).

  • 0

Congratulations Team USA ~ Champions of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Very impressive win! I only watched until it was 3 or 4 -0; the goals were coming so fast I lost track. From what I saw, Carli Lloyd could have had at least one more.

It was like a home game for the American's, there were so many fans in stars and stripes.

  • 0

Lucky you, friend Rylsky!

I just read that Patrick Kane and the Chicago Blackhawks will help you open your new home in it's first game.

I would love to see the game live, to hear if the p a announcer congratulates the Hawks for winning Lord Stanley's mug (and to watch Jonathan Toews live).

  • 0

Good news indeed!
I hope atmosphere on the new home arena for Isles will be equal or more energetic, so sad I didn't visit Nassau... But I hope to lose my voice in Brooklyn when we will celebrate many goals and wins.
For me Chicago became Legendary Team of 2000-2010s, maybe new "Dynasty" as was with our teams in 1980s...

PS
i am glad that Isles played very good vs. Blackhawks during seasons last years.
:)

  • 0

I wish that both of our teams, yours in 2015 - mine in 2016, can duplicate (or exceed) the atmosphere in the Blackhawks old Chicago Stadium and their new United Center - especially the organ and anthem singer!

  • 1

I am so angry, and so dumb!

I thought Game 6 was on Tuesday, Not Monday; so I only saw the last three minutes!

I like the result, most of my Family will like the result; I hope it was a good game.

  • 1

2nd goal was scored by Kane = I am happy.
1 Russian guy became 3rd as goalscorer in Stanley Cup, other VERY YOUNG Russian guy became goalie in finals, how can I be not happy? Very good season, very good at all.

See you next season and finals will be Oilers vs. Isles as good old times:)

  • 0

Rylsky:

Kucherov and Vasilevskiy played very well and will likely make the Russian national team very soon.

The Islanders have a chance to go deep in next year's Cup run, the Oilers don't. Your team plays in a new arena, mine plays in their old one for one final year.

Hockey is a great game and 2015 – 2016 should be a good season.

  • 0

Rylsky:

Here's my prediction for the cup finals.

Chicago beats Tampa in 6 hard fought games. I hope the Blackhawks are over the tons of hits and bruises they got from Anaheim.

  • 1

My heart really splitted to 2 parts with this final. I can say "let's go bolts" because of great Russian guys Vasilevskiy, Kucherov... and I really has many friends who are fans on Chicago...I love Kane, he is one of my personal favs for years. And legendary goalkeeper Tretyak was the coach of goalies of Hawks some years ago, my father was in touch with Tretyak and he is also a legend for all Russian fans.

See how hard to say something really, so I will say it this way: "let's go teams and make us happy with the best show"

Stanley Cup Final:

Tampa Bay vs Chicago

Early thoughts: I will wait a while to see if any injury reports leak out before I make my prediction. Both games 7 semi finals were good games and here's hoping the final games are as good.

  • 0

http://tass.ru/en/sports/795279

I don't know if the leavers and the stayers were divided into KHL and NHL players?

The story is quite clear that Alex Ovechkin stayed on the ice. Less clear is what did Ilya Kovalchuk do.

To the players who stayed ~ good for you. To the players who left ~ tsk tsk tsk.

  • 1

no divide, Baggy.
it's the sad story about grown boys who was beaten in the fair game, then they became upset and do stupid things.
My apologies to all Canadians from Russian fans, our kids was stupid, but not all people here.

  • 0

I would hate to stand around for such a long ceremony myself. I don't know what I would do if I was a player and it was left up to the individual to make their own decision.

I have thought this over and tried to consider the possibilities. No matter what is done, someone is going to be unhappy.

This is probably a one time thing. Forcing the second place team to stand around all the way through the winner's anthem and more doesn't seem fight, but it probably is the way it will stay. The IIHF needs to consider a new approach. Just because it has always been done this way, doesn't mean it can't be done better.

  • 0

Well, I'll try once again to predict the future.

It will be difficult because there are so many players injured and out, or injured and playing through it. The teams of course will not give the opposition any inkling who is injured, nor which half of the body is injured.

EAST NYR over Tampa in 6 games.

WEST Chicago over Anaheim in 7 games.

I hope the games are good, fast and exciting. No matter who wins I hope the winners have enough healthy bodies to play up to their potential in the finals.

  • 0

Whew!

Just in time for me to place my bets for Round Two.

EAST:
NYR over Caps in five.
Montreal over Tampa Bay in seven.

WEST:
Ducks over Flames in five.
Hawks over Wild in seven.

  • 1

I lose almost all my previous bets in Cup 2015 :)
well, now I must say who have my support, no bets :)

Calgary (and what a game #3 was yesterday!!!)
Washington (Ovi+Kuznetsov)
Chicago (I love Kane)
Montreal (i really wish to see finals with Canada)

  • 0

You and I are both taking blows to our hearts this year.

I will blunder ahead with my thoughts and hopes anyway.

I don't think Calgary has the depth or size to prevail over Anaheim, but...

Price should sue for non support. Stick a fork in them, Montreal is highly unlikely to prevail.

Holtby and Lundqvist are playing super. Ovi now has two of the most spectacular goals I have ever seen.

Chicago is my grandson's favourite team, he alone knows why Hossa is his favourite player. Which ever stage the games are played on, Toews rises to the challenge. Go Hawks Go (unless either / both Calgary or Montreal pull a Phoenix and rise from the ashes.

  • 0

Islanders final season in Nassau is over. Capitals win.
It was great season, my friends.

  • 0

It WAS a great season for Islanders fans.

I wonder what the plans are for Nassau and if Long Island will rue not replacing it? Long Island's loss is Brooklyn's gain.

  • 0

Flash, flash, flash, this just in.

Islanders defeat Capitols 2-1 after 15 seconds of overtime!

  • 1

it's full shaking house here, sir.
:)

it's the first overtime win since 1993 for NYI

  • 0

Sir sounds like what young folks would have called my Father back in the day.

Baggy is comfortable and plenty good enough for me Friend Rylsky.

Keep on playing like you are, Islanders!

  • 0

Flash flash flash!

This just in.

The OILERS will pick # 1 in the upcoming draft.

It's nice to have the pick, better would be to use the pick wisely (and that does not mean automatically choosing Connor McDavis)!

  • 0

fumble fingers ~ excitement, who knows.

That would be McDaviD

  • 1

I think EDM needs strong defense most of all.
anyway this is my 2nd NHL fav team, you know

  • 0

We certainly DO need defensemen and a strong #1 goalie.

There is lots of conjecture that McDavid makes Edmonton an attractive place to play (especially in 2016 / 2017 in the new arena) so maybe free agents will not snub us in the future.

  • 1

Isles became very good this year after trades, not draft. 2 defensemen, goalie who create franchise record, 1 defensive forward who played without injuries (Kulemin)... that's it, we are in playoffs now.

  • 0

What you say is true Rylsky.

Very seldom does an 18 year old defense man step right into the NHL, and I don't know if a goalie ever has. It is much more likely with a forward.

This year Aaron Ekblad is playing lights out for Florida and should win rookie of the year, but it is doubtful that he will because he is so seldom seen by many of the voters.

I know I am repeating myself, but...Edmonton should be listened to more readily now, when they approach free agents or work on a trade with the idea of surrounding our young players with mature and capable (BETTER) players.

Or MacT needs to do his job as well as Garth Snow did his!

  • 2

15 April 2015, New York Islanders 4
Washington D.C. Capitol 1

Congrats Rylsky. Yeah Islanders!

  • 1

indeed, Neil!

  • 1

Friend Rylsky:

It's likely that you and I will be the only people writing comments here, but it is Stanley Cup Playoff time.

Initial thoughts:

1. it's great for all members, whether they know why or not, that the Islanders made the final 16 and the deeper they go the better it is for all members.

2. I am sorry that Los Angeles are not in, not because I especially like them; but I will miss Darryl Sutter's post game beat downs of silly questioners.

3. Happy that 5 Canadian teams made the final 16; disgusted that once again the Oilers did not.

4. After a short time studying the match ups I will try to pick winners in a VERY difficult to predict first round.

HAPPY HOCKEY to you and me!

  • 0

1 - :)))
2 - At least we see Calgary in 16.
3 - true. but see 1980s return. now it is 1st of 4 years again for NYI domination and EDM will grow for next 4 years of their Dynasty, i hope so :) BTW new arenas for both teams - it looks like new era too.
4 - VERY difficult to predict = great for watching

HH for you too!

I just watched Russia defeat Sweden 4 - 1 in the junior men's hockey championship, and they looked very impressive!

IF Canada defeats Slovakia, that would result in a very good final game I am thinking. In the earlier subway series Russia played better than Canada, I don't know if there are many new Russian players or basically the same team.

  • 1

FINAL SCORE: RUSSIA 4 - CANADA 5
Outstanding thriller game, wow, it was heartbreaking and breathtaking, 1-5 to 4-5 comeback...and many more...
Congrats to Canada fans, you deserve this win, after 5 years Canada is #1 again.

  • 0

It was no place for a nervous, or old person for sure. Good news / bad news: Russia ~ Canada games will almost always be exciting, I will be older each time I see another.

A good introduction for many of the players to large crowds and noisy buildings that they haven't played in front of before.

  • 2

it's always a Final of Dream for Russians: RUSSIA vs. CANADA! What a start of the Year!
Great gift on Winter Holidays, not only for hockey fans, but for all people here.

Perhaps two or three people will read this post and that is a shame.

Today the funeral for Jean Beliveau was held in Montreal.

Mr. Beliveau, like Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky, ALWAYS made time to speak to any and all who approached him. Unlike most of today's star athletes, he was revered as much or more for his off ice activities as for his undeniable skills in his sport.

I have never read or heard a disparaging word about him. Nobody to my knowledge has ever said “he was a great player, but a dickhead outside of his sport” about him.

I have included one link to coverage of his funeral and there are 4 sub sets for eulogies.

http://www.tsn.ca/hockey-world-says-farewell-to-jean-beliveau-at-emotional-service-1.156301

One of the memories of people who met him that I especially enjoyed hearing was from a knowledgeable hockey commentator who met Mr. Beliveau and his wife Elise at the old course at Saint Andrews. He finally gathered his courage and approached, introduced himself and eventually asked for an autograph. Nobody had any paper to sign. Mrs. Beliveau said “Jean, take his details and write him when you get home. Jean did write him and enclosed a beautiful glossy photograph with his legible signature in gold.

That was how Mr. Beliveau was. He answered every bit of fan mail in person (no boiler plate stuff done by a secretary) and the answers always were impeccably hand written in French or English as appropriate.

If you read this, do everyone you know a favour, and share with them or suggest that they search Jean Beliveau for tons of words about him from many people.

It is so refreshing to read about a great human who happened to play hockey. Unlike many of today's obscenely paid star athletes, he never put a foot wrong. The world would be a better place if athletes with their access to millions and millions of fans lived their lives as Mr. Beliveau lived his and were as good role models as he was. No $28,000 bottles of champagne for him. Neither did he practice or promote thuggery as so many of today's athletes do.

A GREAT HUMAN BEING WHO ALSO HAPPENED TO BE AN ATHLETE!

  • 1

I do agree. He will stay Great forever.

  • 1

I must confess that I never heard Jean Beliveau until tonight. I just found him on Wikipedia. He sounds like a great athlete, a true gentleman and an authentic genuine sports hero of the highest order. Most fathers would be pleased if their sons would look up to a man like him. Baggy, thank you for bringing Mr Beliveau to my attention. May he rest in peace with the Father.

  • 0

Another sad passing from the world of hockey.

http://www.tsn.ca/a-final-farewell-to-my-idol-1.150403

My favorite Jean Beliveau story is a bit different from all the stories you will read that rightly revere him for his skill and most of all his grace away from the game.

My favourite memory highlights how good he was. He was a legend in Quebec before he joined the Canadiens and obviously it would be important in the era of only 6 teams that Montreal should obtain the right to sign him. So...they purchased an ENTIRE league to make that happen!

Hi Rylsky:

I didn't know where to make this comment. I hope you see it here.

I have recently tried four times, twice each at MET and RylskyArt, to send you an email and all four have timed out without delivery, re-tried, and finally died. Do you have any idea what is going on?

I was asking about a model named Viola C who appeared once only at MET.

Maybe if you email me I can reply and we can discuss in private? Thanks in advance my friend.

Congratulations Rylsky, good news RylskyArt members!

Of course Rylsky is on top of how the Islanders are doing; but for casual or non fans: It is still early days but the Islanders are playing great ~ their record is 11 - 5, 5 consecutive wins, and they are playing well at home and on the road.

GO ISLANDERS!

  • 0

Indeed!

  • 0

A pretty good weekend for my teams.

The Arizona Cardinals won to move to 8 - 1, the best record in the NFL. But their starting quarterback ~ Carson Palmer was hurt again.

The Oilers are up and down like a hooker's undies, current win streak is at 2, Taylor Hall is out for a minimum of two more weeks. They have broken Oilers fan's hearts so many times already but this time, even when they lose, there are good signs.

  • 1

I really enjoyed Oilers yesterday - it's paradise for Islanders fan to see how NYR lose
:)

  • 0

And best of all, it may help the membership see some of those fantastic bonus prizes if the Islanders reach certain levels!

  • 1

They have support of so many beatiful ladies here on RA.
:) THEY MUST REACH PLAYOFFS!

  • 0

Recently things have been going quite nicely for some of my teams.

NFL
The Arizona Cardinals have won 3 in a row, are 6 – 1, and one of only two teams in the entire league with only 1 loss.

They, like so many other teams, are losing players at a serious rate. I guess the players are just very big and very fast, and someone is bound to get hurt in the violent collisions that happen on nearly every play. Now players are even suffering serious injuries in celebrating plays or scores, wtf!

NHL
The Oilers have won 4 in a row and Monday night shut out Montreal 3 – 0. Suddenly their record is 4 – 4 – 1.

  • 0

FINALLY!

The Oilers win their first game ~ last team in the NHL to get a win ~ 3-2 over Tampa Bay.

Next up on Wednesday, October 22, Washington Capitals and Alexander Ovechkin.

FINALLY!

October 12, 2014 highlights for me:

NHL

Light schedule, only two games; Toronto and Los Angeles both win their first game

Shock so far; Minnesota shut out Colorado twice, by combined 8 ~ 0.
*****

NFL

My favourite NFL team, the Arizona Cardinals won again, moving to 4 ~ 1 for the season.

Cincinnati and Carolina tied at 37s, pretty hard to do when they play overtime.

Dallas beat Seattle AT Seattle.

The 2014 / 2015 NHL regular season starts tonight with 4 games.

I will try to predict the winners. I am going into this cold not having seen any exhibition games so I have only memories of last year plus some reviews of roster changes.

Maybe after I see some real games on tv I will have some idea of strong and weak teams; here goes my first try.

Montreal at Toronto: 3 - 2 for Montreal in overtime.

Philadelphia at Boston: 4 - 2 for Boston.

Vancouver at Calgary: 3 - 2 for Vancouver in a shootout.

San Jose at Los Angeles: 2 - 1 for Los Angeles.

Now comes my biggest problem. What channel(s) are the games on

  • 1

The Season's start celebration with today's update on RA and with Islanders winning game 5-3 vs. Carolina

  • 0

Results for October 8 games.

Montreal 4 - 3 over Toronto.

Boston 2 - 1 over Philadelphia.

Vancouver 4 - 2 over Calgary.

San Jose 4 - 0 over Los Angeles, what the heck went on here?

  • 1

What a great pre-game show in Toronto!!! Crowd fans singing Canadian Anthem without music and it is spectacular!

  • 0

I didn't see the pre-game show. Was The Tragically Hip good, did they do New Orleans Is Sinking?

During playoffs in Edmonton they sing the Canadian and American anthems without music or lyrics even for the American one.

  • 1

channel? I do forget the channels, I watch it in HD on the website of NHL gamecenter live. or...
http://www.rogers.com/web/content/nhl/

PS
I will watch MTL - TOR and I think it will be Toronto as a winner.

  • 0

It's good that you access NHL gamecenter or rogers, I am watching the rogers network on tv; 2 - 2 about 11 minutes into the 2nd period.

Pinches ample stomach. OUCH! Okay, I am awake.

My Arizona Cardinals are 3 and 0 very early in the regular season after beating the 49ers yesterday. Every team has problems to overcome during the season but in just 3 games the Cardinals have: played without one of the premier defensive tackles in the entire league ~ Darnell Dockett, played their backup quarterback ~ Drew Stanton for the 2nd and 3rd games (he had not played in a game for four seasons) because of an injury to their starting quarterback ~ Carson Palmer, and placed their 2013 sacks leader ~ John Abraham on season ending injury reserve.

It certainly does not impact only the Cardinals, but it seems like so many premier players are being injured this season in training camp (Dockett) and regular season games. I guess that is a direct result of how massive and strong the players are.

Go Cardinals!

Weather update.

We are having our first fall snow, very scattered and wet, destined to melt as soon as it hits the ground; but snow none the less. So, if an Alberta Clipper hits your area from time to time; beware and be ready.

Are you ready for some Hockey? Training camps are coming soon and I can hardly wait.

Different sport, the NFL has started and my Cardinals vs San Diego is tonight's Monday Night Football featured game ~ go Cardinals.

I see many Isles guys did it too.

BTW, good news, Wang sold part of NYI, it's a good news and new season will be promising with new players and goalies.

  • 0

I think they have only the next season in their old dump of a building.

Then they move to the new Barclays Center - it will hold 15,795 seats for Islanders games.

Smaller capacity than most so tickets prices will probably be high.

The off-season was restful but I am ready for hockey (let's hope our teams are ready too!).

  • 0

funny that 1 of 2 new owner's name is...Malkin
:)

  • 0

Is Malkin a common name in Russia?

I have read reports that it is an "invented" name.

  • 1

that name is famous in hockey.
Also well known senator's name.

  • 1

Did I hear someone say Malkin? We love Evgeni "Geno" Malkin here in Pittsburgh... and his parents, too! They fit right in with Pittsburgh's blue-collar attitude. I here Mrs. Malkin's borcht is the bomb!

GO PENS!

  • 0

It's good to see that another hockey fan has found the Fan Zone. That should increase the interesting things to read.

Before the season starts, it would seem that your Penguins have quite an edge over Rylsky's Islanders and my Oilers; but you never know.

  • 1

Wow, welcome to FanZone, DarkStorm! I am glad we are near new season of NHL meeting Pens fan here...

I really hope we will have many reasons to celebrate wins of our teams.

Canada is hosting the 2014 FIFA Under 20 Women's World Cup. Games will be played in Edmonton, Montreal, Toronto, and Moncton.

The “Group of Death” appears to be Group B with The United States, Germany, Brazil, and China. I have read that all the United States games are being televised to the home market and I bet the same is true for Germany; who knows about Brazil and China?

Group B happens to be based in Edmonton so anyone interested can see our stadium and, more than likely, some scenery. You might even see me. I would be in a ridiculous pale grey kepi and long sleeves, trying to keep away from ultra violet exposure.

  • 0

Yes, and the US Women's National Team will dominate the games.:) Hey Baggy, have I told you I had an uncle (by marriage) who was from Edmonton, Alberta. His family were German who lived somewhere in Belarus and immigrated to Canada in 1929. My uncle became a US citizen in 1951, when he married my father's sister.

  • 0

Yes you did mention him. I think you said he is/was a real gentleman and you really respected him.

  • 0

He was the kindest, most warm hearted man I have ever met. Died while visiting Edmonton in 1992.

  • 0

Congratulations Germany.

This was a long, very hard game.

We had some spectacular replays of what happens when two or more players contest high balls. I never knew so many planned or "oops" clashes take place! I'm glad Bastian S. was able to finish after stitching, he's a tough as a Canadian hockey player.

I hope the post game celebrations were happy with no thuggery.

After Nigeria was eliminated from the world cup the Nigerian captain personally offered to refund all the expenses of fans that travelled to Brazil.

He said he just needs their bank details and pin numbers to complete the transaction.!

World Cup Final:

My prediction.

0 - 0 after regulation time.

1 - 1 after extra time.

Argentina wins the shootout 5 - 4.

I guess that is 2 - 1 Argentina?

2014 World Cup Semi Finals

Germany 2 ~ Brazil 1

#2 Netherlands vs Argentina

Netherlands 1 ~ Argentina 0

  • 0

Germany 2 ~ Brazil 2

Netherlands 2 ~ Argentina 1

  • 1

Germany 7 Brazil 1 OMG What went so wrong for Brazil. Imagine, spending all that money to host an international event and your national team gets crushed.

I got the winner, # of Brazil goals (1), but was a little bit off on German goals!

2014 World Cup Final Eight Picks

France vs Germany
Germany 1 – 0
French speed could lead to an upset.

Brazil vs Columbia
Columbia 2 – 1
Brazil has been very ordinary, the expectations will hurt them.

Argentina vs Belgium
Argentina 2 – 1
Picking with my heart, not my head.

Netherlands vs Costa Rica
Netherlands 2- 0
I would be more comfortable if Nigel de Jong was playing.

  • 0

Brazil-1
Columbia-3

Netherlands-3
Costa Rica-1

Argentina-0
Belgium-0

  • 0

And so it starts. USA v Belgium. Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war!

  • 0

0- 0 at the half.

  • 0

0 - 0 at the end of regulation time. Team USA is enjoying the 2014 World Cup. They plan on extending it by at least 30 more minutes.

  • 0

Rylsky,
Was wondering if you have any information about the Flyers 6th round draft pick Radel Fazleev? He was born in Kaszan and played for Russia's under 18 team at the World Juniors tournament. My baseball team and basketball team both suck, so have to look forward to football and hockey season. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

  • 0

Hello, jb1718!

ALl I can say about this guy is that he is talented and he is from one of Russian "hockey is the main sport" cities. AK BARS hockey club makes Kazan people totally mad when they play in playoffs of Continental Hockey League.
So if your team pick most talented guy from Kazan - be sure he is really good player, he only need to have goad coaching and learn the differences of NHL vs. Russia.

I can wish you and Flyers good luck in 2015, but let me hope he will not play his best games vs. Isles...
:)))

  • 0

Thanks Rylsky. Will have to explain sometime about how you became an Isles fan. Think you need to get rid of Garth Snow as the GM before you get back to the dominance of the early 80's though.

  • 0

If you Google his name, you will find several hockey data base sites that gives info about him.

Final score Germany 1 - USA 0. But USA moves on to the knock out round. Next game for USA will probably against Belgium on Tuesday.

  • 0

Are you ready for adrenaline game today? USA vs. Belgium...
wish you good luck!

  • 0

Yes. I will be watching the game. I think we have a fair chance to win.

  • 0

Yes, USA have the chance, I also must say: I like how Juergen Klinsmann made his job in tactics and strategy.

This World Cup is most interesting since 1982 - when I have seen first World Cup by myself. Absolutely great games and it goes on and on!

  • 0

The first time I warched the World Cup was in 1974. I was in Germany and Germany was in the final game against The Netherlands. Germany won and drowned in a flood of beer. Back then no one in the United States cared about soccer.

  • 0

I remember that game.

Then, as now, I liked the Netherlands and the way they played. I have seen it described as 'total football', I always preferred 'clockwork orange.'

The Netherlands scored on a penalty within the first minute and I was so excited.

Unfortunately the Germans stiffened (much like Harald's sparrow) and won 2 to 1.

  • 1

I was in a gasthaus with my German friends. The owner of the gasthaus was a Dutch man. He announced that the beer and wine would be free during the the game. His wife provided trays of cold meats and cheese at no charge. Wonderful good time.

I was fascinated that when Germany won the game, the German patrons started to sing "Deutschland uber alles." But most of them did not know the words. In 1974 West Germany, the song conjured bad memories. Young Germans did not know the song and older Germans knew it all too well.

  • 0

Portugal and USA 2 - 2. Portugal scored in final seconds of stopage time. Christiano set up a perfect cross, his only good kick in the game.

  • 0

USA 2. Portugal 1 in the 82nd minute. Eight more minutes til we win.

  • 0

USA 1 Portugal 1 in the 70th minute. Go USA.

  • 0

87th minute. Belgium 1. Russia 0

  • 0

72 minute, Russia v Belgium 0-0. Freeze the pitch and put on some skates.

USA v Portugal later today. Christiano Ronaldo is playing with a knee injury and one of Portugal's defenders is red carded. Go USA.

  • 0

Wouldn't this be a wonderful thing to see at more sporting events?

http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/worldcup/world-cup-2014-japanese-fans-clean-stadium-after-losing-21-against-ivory-coast-9539793.html

  • 0

Japan will be always different and surprising.

  • 1

United States 2.
Ghana 1

Thus avenging the lost to Ghana in the last World Cup. Go USA!

  • 1

Congratulations! Really hard win over really strong Ghana players. If I am correct previously US always loss vs. Ghana, I remember 2 games and 1-2 in both (Ghana won).

Sad nobody of our members bet on this game.
:)

  • 0

Yes, Ghana eliminated teamUSA from the last two World Cups. It was good to see USA put an end to that. The USA coach publicly stated that it was un realistic to expect USA to win the World Cup. I was afraid that comment might have disheartened the team, but they were though.

In other news, the USA women's team defeated the French women. It is always nice to see France get beaten. It does not matter which sport. The USA Women's soccer team is ranked number 1, while the men's team is not that good.

  • 0

O.k. USA plays Portugal next. Germany smoked Portugal like a cheap cigar 4-1. So I think USA will beat Portugal on Sunday.

  • 0

Germany could smoke any team, don't think so simple.
:)
Portugal is very angry lion now after fail. Cristiano (named as best player in the World 2013-2014) has the final chance to save his team...again.

PS
My bet is USA-1 PORTUGAL-2

  • 0

Nearly time to drop the puck.

LAK 4-2

  • 1

The first game of the World Cup is about to start in Sao Paulo and there are protests and riots in the street outside the statium. There is nothing like the smell of tear gas to help celebrate the world's largest sporting event.

  • 0

Just about to drop the puck.

NYR 4-3.

  • 1

if this was about finals series and if this bet will be correct after game#7... I think you could buy personal Jet Airliner and we will start plan our work and find new locations together.
:)

  • 0

I think today will be a much better game. I can't really pick a favorite, but the score will be around 4 - 1.

Oh what the heck, LAK 4-1.

  • 0

it became a tradition for your bets: you said right goals total for 1 team, winner (but in OT).
:)

And yes, it was another 2 goals comeback for LA this playoffs. Tradition...

  • 0

Weird game! My pig must have had a head cold!

I saw a comment somewhere that NYR are down 0-2, and have not been behind for one second of regulation play.

I'll have to give my pig a little saucer of rum and honey ~ set it on fire and blow out the flames. I hate rum but maybe I'll buy one of those little one ounce bottles, just to see if that helps.

Australia - Spain
Result: Spain
Goals Australia: 0

I propose some "betting quiz" right before first game in Brazil.

any member can write any 10 bets here until game will start (for a game) or until group games will start (for a "winner of group" bet), we will count points, winner "takes it all" (1 year extended subscription for RA).

let's say we need more than 1 person's bets for this "competition". let's say, we want to see 5 or more commentators, let's say it will be fun anyway even if we will not see 5 or more members here.
:)

points for our contest:

- goals total for any team in any game (regular time only, no extra time or shootouts)- 3 points

- result (tied, or win, no matter how many goals was scored) of any game in regular time (no extra time or shootouts). - 3 points

- 2 Teams as winners of a group - 2 points each team (bet on 2 Teams)

- who will reach the final? any Team, no need to bet on winner - 10 points (if your bet was made before 12 of June), 6 points (if your bet was made 12 - 27 of June)

- who will won the cup? - 15 points (if your bet was made before 12 of June), 9 points (if your bet was made 12 - 27 of June)

you can see groups and schedules here:
http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/groups/index.html *

*click on "Group details" to see full schedule of any group or full schedule in PDF : http://resources.fifa.com/mm/document/tournament/competition/01/52/99/91/2014fwc_matchschedule_wgroups_22042014_en_neutral.pdf

** example of 1 bet: "something like 3-2 for LAK."
you will get 3 points for NYR goals only, because of OT winner goal and because regular time ended as tied 2-2. if 3-2 LAK won in regular time - all your 3 bets was correct.

***if all 10 of your bets will be correct - no need to count points. all winners will stay as winners.

contest will be closed after final game of the Cup.

Let's play!

  • 0

About 30 minutes to the opening face-off. No reported injuries that I could find. It will likely take one or two periods to see if anyone is struggling.

I'm going to guess that NYR will start kind of slowly because of the layoff, and it will be a real good game eventually, something like 3-2 for LAK.

  • 0

something like 3-2 for LAK.
===

I am speechless, sir!
:)

  • 0

Even a blind pig can find a truffle now and then.

  • 0

Here we are one day from the Stanley Cup Finals and I wonder who is going to win; NYR or LAK.

Whoever wins, I hope it goes the full 7 games. That would mean we see the maximum number of what should be good games; and could you imagine if LAK won their fourth game 7 in one year.

I'll be back later to update any injury reports (doubtful because teams like to keep that a secret) and make my prediction.

  • 0

Let me say that 7th game LAK-CHI was fantastic... and again LAK won, the miracle of this Cup's 7th games for LA happened again.
For me personally LA is the favorite, not because of this miracle, but also because NYI fan as me will never be very happy to see NYR as Champions.
:)

  • 0

Russia just won IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship' 2014 in Minsk, Belarus.
Final vs. Finland: 5-2

Small sweet candy after Olympic Hockey' 2014 upset of Russian fans.
:)

  • 0

I am glad to see that Alex Ovechkin was healthy enough to play and scored a goal.

Apparently Presidents Putin and Lukashenko both like hockey, or at least Lukashenko was there beside Putin for the gold medal game.

It was interesting to note that Viktor Tikhonov, grandson and namesake of the long time coach of the CKSA and CCCP teams, played and scored.

  • 0

1 more Hockey Legend played his last game for National Team: Jagr announces retirement...
I hope we 'll see him one more year in NJD...

  • 0

Being from Pittsburgh, I couldn't help but having said "good riddance" to JJ. His initial appearance, to all intents, was a bright shining point, but ultimately, his real love came out and it was clear that it wasn't in Pittsburgh.

  • 1

Malkin also scored, and his scored goal became winner of Final game (PP goal).
I've heard some rumors that Tikhonov will leave KHL league and move to some NHL club.
Also Tikhonov became a leader by Goal+Assist (8+8) score after all 10 games of IIHF World Championship '2014 he played.

PS
I really prefer to split politics and sports. At least because of we can go thru history and see how politicians used sports for cold war and even more... You know that Olympics "Fire Ritual" was created by Goebbels and Olympics in Berlin was in time of Nazism and racism... It's not sportsmen fault. Remember Moscow 1980,LA 1984... Goodwill Games... I hope we will never ever talk about politics here. Deal?

  • 1

That's easy enough to agree to, especially since only you, fer_realz and I seem to have any interest in hockey.

I should point out that the love of hockey is in the dna of most Canadians, even politicians, and very recent arrivals.

I hope the 2014 FIFA World Cup generates more discussion than hockey.

  • 0

LOL
I really have very little interest in sports, except as much as I need to keep up with the gossip to be able to converse with my clients (Here in Wisconsin folks are very passionate about the Packers and the Brewers and the Badgers).
(That's why I pasted the link to the Onion story that gently mocks peoples' addiction to sports)
Speaking of Politics, I very much wish that people were as passionate about their politics ~ local, state, national, international ~ as they are about sports. But, that is not the world we live in nowadays... ( :
Having said so, I have to admit that acquiring a minimal sports literacy "after the fact" (most Americans grow up speaking sports, it was very much a foreign language to me most of my life) has been educational and not entirely unenjoyable. ( :

  • 1

No problems, this area on RA will stays for sports talk, no matter when member will want to write here.

As for 2014 FIFA World Cup, I think we will create some betting zone here. And I promise some prize for a winner.

:)

  • 1

"The sports team from my area is superior to the sports team from your area."
~ The Onion, "America's Finest News Source" (Just ask 'em, they'll tell ya!)
(Very funny satire story, check out link below):

  • 1

I will read, thanks
:)

  • 1

My son likes The Onion and sends me some of their articles, mostly about cats as I remember. I already have too many emails from sites I like so The Onion is out.

Interesting how they can satirize just about anything the general public likes or is buzzing about.

Thanks for the link.

  • 1

You're welcome. One thing I really like about the Onion is that it was started by students at my Alma Mater, the UW-Madison, back in the early '90's.
Even after they went nationwide, one could still pick up a free paper copy at newsstands all over Madison up until about 5 years ago, so I have 3 cardboard boxes full of back issues. Marvelous humor!

  • 0

Thanks very much Rylsky for creating / approving this blog spot.

You have selected two very attractive ladies to grace the blog with their presence.

I haven't been watching the action from Belarus, but I do note that Latvia and Teddy Nolan continue to generate surprise results.

  • 1

Yes, Latvia is surprise... (for me - only vs. USA)

But see that:
http://www.iihfworlds2014.com/en/games/2014-05-09/FRA-vs-CAN/
http://www.iihfworlds2014.com/en/games/2014-05-12/SVK-vs-FRA/

somebody won jackpot if they bet on France in these games
:)

  • 0

Indeed they would have.

I haven't yet found it via search, but I think there was a year in which every team in some major professional league ~ I don't remember the sport ~ lost its' home opener. That would have been a jackpot too.

  • 0

Just a few random thoughts before I dare try to predict the outcomes of the two semi-final series.

I will be listening to and reading reports of the coach's press conferences before and after all games. Alain Vigneault and Michel Therrien are good friends ~ Alain has a well deserved reputation for being funny and appreciating when funny things happen; Michel until recently has been viewed as serious if not grumpy. Michel did lighten up a bit when he described P K Subban as a not very good left winger.

Darryl Sutter and Joel Quenneville are as different as night and day. Darryl speaks slowly and with seeming disdain for having to speak at all and has zero tolerance for questions he deems unworthy of more than a token answer (read 99.99 % of questions). His taciturn nature seems to generate a death wish for some reporters to receive his curt answers. Joel is mercurial in words and gestures, which has resulted in hefty fines.

I have to see if there are any updates to health of players and additions or deletions to the rosters before I submit predictions.

Two things I can predict are that the hockey will be fast with lots of heavy hitting and that could result in depleted rosters for the finals.

  • 0

What do you think when many people said that now the half of success in hockey depends on goaltender? Do you have your fav. goaltender during this playoffs? Maybe Price?

  • 0

Goaltending is very important and a hot goaltender can help steal a game and a series.

I believe that there are three excellent and very evenly matched goaltenders; Quick, Price, and Lundqvist.

Some "experts" feel that Crawford is the least talented of the four scheduled starters, but he and Quick have each won a Stanley Cup; Lundqvist and Price have not.

  • 0

Wow, what a comeback tonight in Chicago...

  • 0

It certainly was!

I thought Chicago had it under control so I went out to continue planning and planting some of my garden.

L A has done this before, most famously the Miracle on Manchester.

Stay tuned, there could be a blowout for L A or something entirely different coming.

  • 0

BTW, are both Sting and Robert DeNiro - NYR fans?

  • 0

Could be, or just want to be seen.

More interesting I thought was seeing Kate Upton, in a Detroit Tiger hat with Justin Verlander, at the Montreal / Boston game #7.

http://nesn.com/2014/05/kate-upton-justin-verlander-take-in-bruins-canadiens-game-7-photos/

http://ca.eonline.com/news/542433/kate-upton-s-boobs-distract-boyfriend-justin-verlander-from-watching-the-hockey-game

  • 0

And tonight we had the game that proves what "the great goaltender" is.
Let's see the OT now... +1 more coffee cup.
:)

  • 0

Dustin only has to do it three more times eh, because NYR sure are playing better.

Montreal fans are hoping that he has the same impact as Ken Dryden did when he first played in the playoffs after only six games experience.

  • 0

NYR - LAK Finals?
:)

  • 0

Just before game 5 in Montreal, and your suggestion looks very likely.

But that's why they play the games anyway, LA came back twice from three games down this year.

  • 0

Good idea, Mr, Baggy!

Let me start it with my message

Today is the start of NHL semifinals and opening will be Rangers vs. Canadiens
I was impressed how MTL played this Cup's 1&2 rounds, I must say that my bet is they must play finals. But I really don't know who is my fav in CHI vs. LAK battle. LA are great with their comebacks in 2 series, but Chicago is a Stanley Cup winners of 2013...
:)

by the way, does anyone watching IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship 2014 in Belarus? Is it uninteresting after Sochi's Winter Olympic Hockey?
